NotesAugust 26, 2004Last term there were a bunch of people handing out little green bibles to everyone as they walked by. I happened to run across mine in the car last week on the way to the airport. I was looking through it, and in the first dozen pages, there is a verse translated into about 25 different languages. I was looking at that for a while, trying to pick out as many words as I could from different languages, and it made me remember how much I enjoy studying language. I had that great Linguistics course Fall term of last year which I really enjoyed. I decided I would look at more linguistics courses the University offers. Today, I did that. I found LING 290, which looks like fun and is a prerequisite to other linguistics courses as well. I decided to switch my LING 160 for LING 290. "Language, Power and Gender" looks less like the kind of linguistics I want to study than "Introduction to Lilnguistic Analysis." It worked out really well, too, cause all I had to do to fit it in was move my math class to 2 hours later. Now my schedule looks great with only one class on Tuesdays and Thursdays! That means I have 4 in a row on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, of course. But that's still only 11:00 to 3:00, compared to 8:30 to 3:30 in high school! So now I'm looking forward even more to starting school again! May 26, 2004So I'm all registered for fall term, and my schedule looks half decent! I decided to go with Linguistics over Architecture History. I technically can't be in GER 311 without completing 203, but I'm going to take the CLEP test over the summer to get credit for 201 202 and 203. But for some reason the system let me register anyway. So I'm all set for next year if I dont change my mind! I'll post my schedule here in the next few days. May 24, 2004So after my first year has almost come to a conclusion, I've decided to plan my classes a little differently next year. Maybe it's the sun shining for the first time since summer, maybe it's just that I've been at school for a few months, but Spring term just isn't a good term to get a lot of intense work done. So for next year, I'm planning a bit differently. I'm going to give myself a medium load of work for Fall term, which will give me time to meet new people and socialize with the incoming students, Winter term will be my intense term doing the homework that isn't as fun, and I'll have a light load in the Spring with homework that will be more fun to do. That's the plan. Now we'll see if it's possible to pull this off. I have to register for Fall term tomorrow. I'm looking at what I still have to take to fill my gen ed requirements, and I'm about half way through in all the groups: Arts & Letters, Social Science, Science, Writing. So I should take care of some of that. I'm also thinking about getting a Computer Science minor. I'll do CIS 210 with KC in the Fall, along with the MATH 231 co-requirement. Two down, two to go. There will be homework every week for CIS 210, but CIS homework is nice. There is a certain satisfaction you get from solving a programming problem and knowing it's done. Requirements for the CIS minor:
I think it would be fun to take some German next year. If I take the CLEP test over the summer and get credit for a year of German, then I'll be able to take GER 311 in the fall! I miss German, it's been a while since I've used it. That should be fun. So far all the classes are fitting together in my schedule! So far I'm taking CIS 210, MATH 231, GER 311. That will be a fair amount of homework already! But I need one more class to take 16 credits. None of the art classes I need fit into the schedule. I don't want to take WR 122 at all yet. The other physics course I want to take conflicts. The art classes I need conflict in various ways. My best shot is probably with LING 160: "Language, Power, Gender" since it counts for social science and my other multicultural requirement. Or ARH 314: "History of Western Architecture". I just hope that won't be too much of a homework load. So that's my thought to sleep on for the night. Linguistics or architecture history. |
